Certified Pre-Owned vs Private Sale: What Actually Changes

Warranty, inspection, RC transfer and price — an honest comparison of buying a used luxury car from a dealership versus a private seller in Jaipur.

A private sale is usually 5–10% cheaper on paper. A dealership purchase adds inspection, reconditioning, warranty and documentation — which is where most of the risk in this segment actually sits.

On a private sale you assume every unknown: unreported accident repairs, deferred air suspension work, pending challans and the entire RC transfer process. On a dealership car, those are priced in and disclosed.

The single biggest financial variable is deferred maintenance. An air suspension overhaul on a Range Rover or GLE can cost ₹1.5–3 lakh; a mechatronic unit on a DSG-equipped car can cost ₹1.8 lakh. That is where a 5% discount disappears.

Our recommendation: buy privately only if you can put the car on a lift at an independent luxury specialist first, and if you are comfortable handling RC transfer at the RTO yourself.
